Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, as an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. The school she was attending after only two years to pursue a career as an actor. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles such as in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
